Mvula Drae is an up and coming hip hop artist, born in Cape Town, South Africa in ’96. Mvula Drae became a highly notable name in the underground hip hop scene in Cape Town between the years 2014 and 2019, and went on to perform at multiple music festivals, namely Synergy Live, Sizzled, Love All, and more. He also opened for spotlight acts like Mick Jenkins and YoungstaCPT, crossover acts like Fokofpolisiekar and Cream Machine at club shows, and accompanied Jack Parow for several dates along his winter tour. During this time, Mvula Drae released several singles, 1 short mixtape titled “Six”, and 2 EP’s titled “Listen to the Lyrics” and “Listen to the Lyrics 2” which were accompanied by several music videos. The latter of these releases bagged him a nomination for “Artist of the Year” at the City Awards 2019 (City Awards 011 & 021), air-play and interviews on YFM, GoodHope FM, other community, online and campus radio stations, and boasted a feature from Arsonal Da Rebel.
Mvula Drae moved to Johannesburg, South Africa, in 2019 prospecting opportunities to further his music career, however 2020 saw a sharp decline in the artist’s health and wellbeing. Around the same time, all of his music was unexpectedly removed from major streaming platforms without explanation. In 2021, Mvula Drae reemerged with an ominous release titled “Six Minutes of Silence”, which, contrary to the title, spoke volumes for the artist’s influence in the scene.
In 2022, Positive Thinkers Ltd., an independent record label, started by Mvula Drae’s long time friend and peer in music, CxlxB, took Drae under its wing for his first official releases in 3 years as well as re-releases of selected tracks. With the support of PT (Positive Thinkers), Mvula Drae soon took to Johannesburg’s stages for his first time, opening for big ticket acts like J Molley and KashCPT.
